Varicose Veins and Spider Veins
At Windsor Vascular Care, we specialize in the diagnosis and treatment of venous disorders, including varicose veins and spider veins. These conditions are not only cosmetic concerns but can also lead to discomfort and complications if left untreated. Our state-of-the-art treatment options, including VenaSeal and sclerotherapy alongside conventional surgical vein stripping/phlebectomy, compression therapy, and lifestyle modifications, offer effective relief tailored to each patient's needs.
Why Do Varicose Veins Develop?
The veins in the legs are responsible for returning blood back to the heart against gravity. This is achieved through muscle contractions in the legs and one-way valves in the veins that prevent backward blood flow. When these valves become weak or damaged, blood can pool in the veins, leading to the formation of varicose veins. This condition, known as chronic venous insufficiency, can cause symptoms such as swelling, heaviness, pain, and skin changes. Risk factors include genetics, prolonged standing or sitting, pregnancy, obesity, and aging.
What Are Varicose Veins?
Varicose veins are enlarged, twisted veins that appear under the skin, most commonly in the legs. They often appear blue or purple due to poor circulation and weakened vein walls. Varicose veins can lead to discomfort, leg fatigue, swelling, and complications such as skin ulcers if left untreated.
Symptoms of Varicose Veins
Some individuals experience no symptoms beyond the visible appearance of varicose veins, while others may suffer from:
- Leg swelling and heaviness
- Aching, burning, or throbbing pain
- Skin discoloration and thickening in severe cases
- Increased discomfort after long periods of standing or sitting
- Ulcers in advanced stages of venous disease
What Are Spider Veins?
Spider veins are small, thin veins that appear close to the surface of the skin, often forming a web-like pattern. They are typically red, blue, or purple and can develop on the legs, face, or other areas. Unlike varicose veins, spider veins do not bulge and are usually painless, though some patients may experience mild discomfort or itching.
How Do Spider Veins Differ from Varicose Veins?
While both varicose veins and spider veins are caused by poor circulation and weakened vein walls, they have distinct differences:
- Size & Appearance: Varicose veins are large, bulging, and twisted, while spider veins are small and thread-like.
- Symptoms: Varicose veins can cause pain, swelling, and skin changes, whereas spider veins are usually painless.
- Severity: Varicose veins may indicate chronic venous insufficiency, while spider veins are mostly cosmetic concerns.
When Should You See a Vein Specialist?
If you are experiencing persistent symptoms such as leg pain, swelling, or skin changes, or if you are concerned about the appearance of varicose or spider veins, you may benefit from an evaluation by a vein specialist. A specialist can determine the severity of venous disease and recommend the most appropriate treatment to improve your symptoms and overall leg health.
Evaluation of Varicose and Spider Veins
During your consultation, we conduct a thorough assessment, including a review of your medical history and a physical examination. In most cases, a diagnostic ultrasound is completed by our specialized sonographers before your first visit. This non-invasive test evaluates blood flow and identifies any underlying venous disease, helping us determine the most effective treatment plan for you.
Treatment Options:
Our practice offers a variety of cutting-edge treatments tailored to each patient's needs:
Compression Therapy
Compression stockings are a non-surgical option that helps improve circulation by applying graduated pressure to the legs. They assist in reducing swelling, discomfort, and the progression of venous disease. Compression therapy is especially beneficial for those with mild varicose veins, individuals who stand for long hours, and patients recovering from vein procedures. For optimal results, we offer on-site certified fitters to ensure your compression stockings are custom-fitted to your specific needs.
Physical Activity & Lifestyle Changes
Regular physical activity, such as walking, cycling, or swimming, plays a crucial role in promoting vein health. Exercise strengthens the calf muscles, which help pump blood back to the heart and reduce venous pressure. Maintaining a healthy weight and avoiding prolonged periods of standing or sitting can also minimize symptoms and slow disease progression.
VenaSeal Closure System
VenaSeal is a minimally invasive procedure that uses a medical adhesive to seal diseased veins, rerouting blood flow to healthier veins and improving overall circulation. Unlike traditional treatments, VenaSeal does not involve heat or multiple injections of anesthetic, making it a more comfortable option with a quicker recovery time.
Windsor Vascular Care is proud to be the only clinic in Windsor-Essex and the surrounding region to offer this advanced treatment option.
This procedure is not covered by OHIP.
Sclerotherapy
Sclerotherapy is an effective treatment for both spider veins and small varicose veins. A specialized solution is injected into the veins, causing them to collapse and fade over time. This procedure is quick, requires no anesthesia, and allows patients to return to daily activities immediately.
This procedure is not covered by OHIP.
Surgical Vein Stripping and Phlebectomy
For larger varicose veins that cannot be treated with minimally invasive methods, surgical removal may be necessary. Vein stripping involves removing problematic veins through incisions, while phlebectomy uses a tiny hook to extract varicose veins. These are invasive procedures performed under general anesthesia in a hospital setting and are covered by OHIP. However, it's important to note that wait times for these surgeries can be quite long.
